Our BJJ Beginner’s Program
Our Beginner's Brazilian Jiu-jitsu program is focused on building a solid foundation of fundamental techniques.
We believe that great jiujitsu is simple jiujitsu.
This program is designed to give you an understanding of how leverage and technique can be u
sed to overcome larger and stronger opponents . This means that we teach high-percentage proven techniques that almost anyone can easily learn
and apply in a real situation against a resisting opponent.
These techniques have been tested and refined through decades of study. The goal of
the Basic program is to provide a firm foundation of the fundamentals of Brazilian JiuJitsu and to prepare the student for the Advanced Brazilian
Jiujitsu Program.
No experience is necessary.
Meet Professor Peter Lawson.
- 3 x Pan Americian Jiujitsu Champion
- Over 30years Martial Arts experience
- Holds 5 blackbelts
- Former Manager of the Renzo Gracie World Headquarters-NYC
Peter Lawson, B.B.A. is a martial arts aficionado whose expertise are in the following disciplines: Seido Karate, Sanucus Ryu Jiujitsu and
Brazilian Jiujitsu. In addition, Mr. Lawson studies Iaijitsu and Kenjitsu (earning a black belt in both arts) under ,
and Tuidi Jitsu/Kyushu Jitsu under .
Moreover, he is a student of Gun Defense under
and is a member of .
The preceding describes the eclectic background of Peter Lawson with the common thread of duty, dedication and devotion to excellence –
to the arts – the martial arts. The common thread that runs through 5 of the black belts he earned via his 30 years plus experience.
Peter Lawson started his experiential journey in the world of martial arts at the age of 11 years old in Jamaica, West Indies. Under the tutelage of , he studied Seido Karate after which he became 2nd Belt Karate Champion of Jamaica in 1982. Eventually, at the tender age of 15 years old, he
returned to New York City to attend college. In N.Y.C., World Seido Karate founder promoted Mr. Lawson to his first black belt on
October 4, 1987 after a grueling 2 hour sparring session (the final installment of a 2 week test). Later, he earned a 2nd place at the World Seido Karate
Invitational Tournament, Middle Weight Division – Black belt. The late great Seido Karate Senior Instructor
trained and greatly
influenced Mr. Lawson, especially, at the legendary “WAR” nights (Friday nights).
Next, Mr. Lawson intensely trained (6 days per week; up to 4 hours per day) with the late great in Sanucus Ryu Jiujitsu
after a chance meeting in Brooklyn. First, he was invited to train at the good doctor’s residence before transferring to the infamous
“When World Collide Dojo.” The rigorous training paid off when Mr. Lawson earned a 6th degree blackbelt in Sanucus Ryu Jiujitsu.
In February of 1997, Mr. Lawson began studying a new art – Brazilian Jiujitsu – which became popular with the advent of the Ultimate Fighting
Championships and Mixed Martial Arts competitions. Mr. Lawson’s study took him all over the world: Japan; Brazil; U.A.E., and throughout the U.S.A.
with his illustrious instructor – and his family. Within his years of studying said art, Mr. Lawson won 3 Gold medals, 1 Silver
medal and 1 Bronze medal at the Pan American Jiujitsu Championships. He, also, won a Bronze medal at the International Masters & Seniors Championship
in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Philosophically, Peter Lawson adheres to the golden rule: “to whom much is given, much is required.” Therefore, Mr. Lawson’s journey continues as he
shares with the world his passion for the martial arts via his academy located in Brooklyn, New York. Finally, Professor Lawson cherishes his
role as a role model to his students insomuch that the martial arts nurtures and develops a sound body and a sound mind. The combination of
which allows you to conquer all – starting with the self (discipline, control and confidence) and then with the world around you.
”Hard training requires a lot of physical stamina, but it also builds mental and spiritual strength too.“

What students are saying about Brooklyn Martial Arts:
Brazilian Jiujitsu in Brooklyn
“I have been studying Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Professor Pete Lawson for 2 1/2 years. Thanks to his instruction I have become stronger,
more patient, and have witnessed a vast improvement in my Jiu Jitsu game. Professor Pete is a great instructor. He always takes the time
to show and explain the intricacies of the sport. Though I hope to never have to fight, it’s nice to know that I could defend myself
if I needed to. I owe my confidence to Professor Pete and my training partners at the Renzo Gracie Academy in Brooklyn.”
Jared Bretas
BJJ in Brooklyn
"An exciting class with an outstanding professor, one of the best investments I have made towards my personal
development as a person.”
Mike D.
Brazilian Jiujitsu in Brooklyn
"The friendly atmosphere, the great workout you receive, and the knowledge that you are getting top notch instruction
from a Renzo Gracie black belt sold me to this school. But what impresses me the most about Professor Pete is the type of student he attracts.
Everyone is willing to help out a 44 year old beginner like myself."
Dr.Nobi
BJJ in Brooklyn
"I have followed Mixed Martial Arts since the beginning of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
Seeing the power of Royce Gracie against much bigger opponents inspired me to want to become a master of Jiu Jitsu--
The fact that all this happened when I was 10 years old is beside the point-- While it took me some years and adulthood to start training in
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu- I can say for sure that I am hooked. There is no better work out on the face of the planet, and size, shape,
and athletic ability do not matter; all on has to do in BJJ is show up and try. I can honestly say that since beginning my training, I
sleep better at night, am more focused during my work day, and as a High School English Teacher I need all the focus and energy I can get,
and have gotten stronger and leaner. Professor Lawson provides and environment of mutual respect, support, and no ego.”
Daniel Fayerberg
Brazilian Jiujitsu in Brooklyn
"I've trained in other establishments and I have to say I'm pretty fortunate to have found Professor Lawson's Academy .
It is a wonderful training environment for a beginner and advanced students. Learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can be an intimidating experience but if
you're in the right environment, with good training partners and top notch instruction, you just can't go wrong….and it's located in Brooklyn!"
Eric Stafford
BJJ in Brooklyn
"I signed up for a free trial class simply because I was curious about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, the “gentle art” – a name that belies
its effectiveness as anybody who has seen the UFC knows. It didn’t take me long to realize how Professor Pete Lawson achieved mastery in so many forms
of martial arts in such a short period of time. He exhibited a penchant for meticulousness and spared no detail as he taught us students the art as it
was taught to him by the legendary Master Renzo Gracie. I stayed because I found the art to be beautiful, because it exercised my body and my mind,
and because I was immediately welcomed as a part of the Renzo Gracie Brooklyn family. I couldn’t ask for a better group of people to train with everyday,
and I was pleased to discover that Professor Pete Lawson displayed the same eagerness
and attention to detail in every class he taught. I offer my highest gratitude and recommendation to Professor Pete Lawson and his wonderful school.”
Evan Choi, Medical Student
Brazilian Jiujitsu in Brooklyn
"As this was my first time studying martial arts
I wasn't sure what to expect. Peter Lawson
is an expert teacher to both
beginner and expert students.
He makes everyone feel comfortable in the
early stages, yet challenges all students and
has them performing to their maximum potential.
While the classes are open and friendly, the
conditioning is challenging. Whether you are
interested in just getting into better shape or
want to learn about the tactical structure of
Brazilian Jui Jitsu, Peter's classes are for you"

"Since starting my training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
with Professor Pete, I have lost weight, gained
strength, endurance, confidence and real-life skills.
It is fun, exciting and consistently challenging.
The teachers are great. I can't say enough about it."

Brazilian Jiujitsu in Brooklyn
"My original intentions for becoming a member of
a martial arts school was to simply get back into
shape via a structured class environment.
I decided that my days of expensive gym memberships
were over and that I needed a routine that went
beyond simple 'repetitions' and 'sets' and BJJ has
more than exceeded my needs and expectations
(Lost 25lbs. in 5 months!). Professor Lawson's
profound knowledge and dedication toward the
martial arts are tirelessly shared to all at any level
and his natural teaching ability only increases my
desires to learn more with every class. BJJ has
become a vital component of my life in terms of
my health both physically and mentally and I can
honestly say I owe it to Professor Lawson and the
great environment he has created."

"Many thanks to you Professor Pete,
Your class has taught me many things
about myself that I was unable to deal
with prior to training with you. I use wha
t I have learned every day and will continue
to so. See on the mats!"
Darrin Lundy

Brazilian Jiujitsu in Brooklyn
"Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is so much fun that I
almost forget that I am getting in shape when
I do it. Training with Peter Lawson, I feel that
I get excellent instruction. He is clear and precise
as well as easy going and friendly. I love the
camaraderie at our school and I am always looking
forward to the next practice. If you are even a little
bit curious, I recommend that you try a free class.
I know that I only regret not signing up sooner."

"I am 50 years old and just received my blue belt after a year and half of training at Brooklyn Martial Arts.
I decided to join Brooklyn Martial Arts after being a long time member of my neighborhood gym and being pretty bored and unmotivated from my gym experience.
At Brooklyn Martial Arts the atmosphere is very relaxed and friendly. The students are very respectful and helpful with each other.
I have lost 15lbs and am in better shape than when I was 30 years old. With a family to support, my biggest concern prior to joining was getting
hurt working out with over zealous 20 and 30 year old kids, but the instructors stress safety at every turn and the supervision and instructing is
first rate. No injuries to report My experience at Brooklyn Martial Arts is a far cry from the coldness at my old gym.
Today, I'm fit and can confidently defend myself if the need ever arises."
Highly Recommended.
Robbie
Brazilian Jiujitsu in Brooklyn
"This school is great! They offer instruction for beginner BJJ classes Mon-Friday at 615-715 or 715-815 and on Saturdays from 11-12.
They also offer advance BJJ 815-930 and on Saturdays from 12-115. This makes it a little easier for me to train.
The classes are taught by Professor Pete Lawson a Renzo Gracie Black belt. He also study under the legendary Grandmaster
DR Moses Powell,
and has black belts in several other martial arts. He is patient and an excellent instructor. The price to train is reasonable considering
you can train every day except Sunday. I am active duty Gunnery Sergeant in United States Marine Corps that is stationed in Brooklyn, NYC.
So finding a school to enhance my fitness and Martial arts capabilities is very significant for me and my job. Renzo Gracie Brooklyn provides
me with instruction I need to excel in that aspect.
So if you are in Brooklyn area and want quality instruction of Gracie Jiu Jitsu, Come to Renzo Gracie Brooklyn!"
